Best Amazon Lodges in Ecuador: Choosing Between a Rainforest Lodge and a River Cruise

To see the Ecuadorian Amazon hassle-free, choose between a rainforest lodge (Yasuni, Napo Wildlife Center, La Selva or Sacha, from 3 to 9 days) or a 3, 4 or 7-night river cruise (Manatee or Anakonda). You fly Quito to El Coca in about 30-35 minutes. A yellow fever vaccine is recommended, and you should check the security situation before booking.
- Flight Quito to El Coca: about 30-35 minutes, plus a motorised canoe transfer
- Lodges in our catalogue: from 3 days / 2 nights to 9 days / 8 nights
- Manatee and Anakonda river cruises: 3, 4 and 7 nights
- Yellow fever: recommended by Spain's Foreign Ministry for the lowland Amazon (below 2,300 m)
- El Coca is in Orellana, a province the Foreign Ministry advises avoiding unless necessary
Jungle lodge or river cruise: which Amazon trip suits you?
There are two usual ways to sleep in the Ecuadorian rainforest with a guide. A lodge is a fixed base from which you head out each day to walk, paddle a canoe or climb an observation tower. A river cruise moves along the water and changes scenery every day. We offer both, and the practical difference is pace: with a lodge you unpack once and go deep; on a boat you see more places but with a fixed schedule.
This guide only compares what we can document from our own listings: four lodges in the El Coca area (Yasuní EcoLodge, Napo Wildlife Center, La Selva EcoLodge and Sacha Lodge) and two river cruises (Manatee and Anakonda). We do not describe facilities or wildlife at a specific property unless it is in the listing; for that, we send a detailed proposal for your dates.
| Format | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Rainforest lodge | One base; daily guided walks and canoe outings with a naturalist | Travellers who want depth in one place and no packing and unpacking |
| River cruise | Fixed 3, 4 or 7-night itineraries on set days | Travellers who prefer on-board comfort and variety |

How do you reach an Amazon lodge, and what is a typical day like?
Most of the lodges in our catalogue are in the El Coca area on the Napo River. The usual route is a flight from Quito to El Coca of about 30-35 minutes, then a transfer by motorised canoe along the river. The Quito-El Coca-Quito flights are not included in the lodge listings and are confirmed in the quotation.
Days revolve around light and wildlife. Expect early starts with a naturalist guide, forest trails, canoe outings, observation towers and, depending on the lodge, visits to clay licks where parrots gather. Pink river dolphins and monkeys can be seen, but wildlife is never guaranteed: it depends on the season, the weather and luck. Our Quito + Amazon programmes also include birdwatching and an encounter with Kichwa culture, subject to local conditions.

Napo Wildlife Center, Sacha Lodge, La Selva and Yasuní EcoLodge: how do they compare?
Our listings give durations, room categories and per-person prices based on two sharing. Below is the factual comparison; for facilities, internal access and wildlife at each place we will advise you in the proposal, because it varies by departure.
| Lodge | Durations listed | Room categories | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yasuní EcoLodge | 3 days / 2 nights up to 8 days / 7 nights | Standard Cabin and Mini Suites | From USD 709.00 |
| La Selva EcoLodge | 3 days / 2 nights up to 5 days / 4 nights | Stateroom | From USD 1,290.00 |
| Napo Wildlife Center | 4 days / 3 nights up to 8 days / 7 nights | Standard Cabin and Mini Suites | From USD 1,635.00 |
| Sacha Lodge | 4 days / 3 nights up to 9 days / 8 nights (Standard) or 8 days / 7 nights (Suite) | Standard and Suite | From USD 1,890.00 |
Read the price as a starting point: it is the shortest, most basic option in each listing, per person sharing a double room, and it rises with more nights, a higher category or a single room. As a guide, Yasuní EcoLodge is the most accessible entry point, while Sacha Lodge and Napo Wildlife Center sit at the higher end. That says nothing about the quality of the experience on its own; it is a matter of budget and what you want included.

How many days do you need at an Amazon lodge?
Count useful nights, not calendar days. The first day includes the flight and the river transfer, and the last one the journey back. A 3 day / 2 night stay therefore leaves little margin: it works as a taster, but with just one full day of exploring.
- 3 days / 2 nights: to sample the rainforest or fit it into a short trip. Available at Yasuní EcoLodge and La Selva EcoLodge.
- 4 days / 3 nights: the starting format at Napo Wildlife Center and Sacha Lodge, and the one used in our 7-day Quito + Amazon programmes.
- 5 days or more: for birders, photographers and anyone who wants to take it slowly. Every lodge in the catalogue offers at least one 5-day option.
If you plan to pair the jungle with the Galapagos, remember that two nature-heavy legs back to back are tiring: leave a buffer day in Quito between them. We cover how to fit it all together in Ecuador in 10 Days: Quito, Galapagos & Baños Itinerary.
What do the Manatee and Anakonda river cruises offer?
Both vessels are listed under Amazonas, with Standard and Deluxe suites and three durations: 3, 4 and 7 nights. Itineraries run on fixed departure days, which constrains the rest of your trip.
| Cruise | 3 nights | 4 nights | 7 nights | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manatee | Friday to Monday | Monday to Friday | Friday to Friday or Monday to Monday | From USD 2,415.00 |
| Anakonda | Sunday to Wednesday | Wednesday to Sunday | Wednesday to Wednesday or Sunday to Sunday | From USD 2,995.00 |
The listings state that flights, taxes and extras are confirmed in the quotation, and they do not specify the river stretch or embarkation ports. Before you decide, ask us for those details in writing, along with how to get from Quito to the boarding point. A cruise costs more than a short lodge stay, but it spares you changing rooms and bundles everything into one package.
What vaccinations and health precautions do you need for the Amazon?
Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends the yellow fever vaccine for visitors to, among others, the provinces of Napo, Orellana, Pastaza, Sucumbios, Morona-Santiago, Zamora-Chinchipe and Esmeraldas below 2,300 m, which means the lowland Amazon. See an international vaccination centre well ahead of your trip.
There is also dengue, and a risk of malaria, chikungunya and zika in humid coastal and jungle areas. Bring repellent and lightweight long clothing, and follow your doctor's advice. Coming down from Quito's altitude (about 2,850 m), the rainforest feels hot and humid; drink plenty of water and keep the most demanding outings for when you have settled in.
Is it safe to travel to the Ecuadorian Amazon?
With caveats. Spain's Foreign Ministry reports a security crisis in the country, with frequent states of emergency, and advises against travel, except when necessary, to several provinces, including Sucumbios and Orellana. El Coca, the starting point for most lodges, is in Orellana. Weigh this before booking.
The Yasuni and Napo lodges operate with organised operator logistics: a meet and greet, coordinated transfers and a canoe to the lodge, with no improvised transit. Even so, the situation changes, which is why we recommend following the current official information and talking to us before you book: we will tell you which stretches need care and what alternatives exist. Always travel with insurance, look after your bags and devices, and save 911 (the ECU911 app). More context in our Ecuador Travel Guide: Practical Tips and Requirements.
How can you combine the Amazon with Quito and the Galapagos?
The simplest way is to add a three-night lodge stay to Quito. Our programmes do it in 7 days (6 nights: 3 in Quito and 3 in the Amazon): Quito y Amazonía · Napo Wildlife Center · 7 días and Quito y Amazonía · Yasuní Ecolodge · 7 días. They include an airport welcome, Pululahua and the Middle of the World, a river transfer to the lodge, and a return with a visit to Quito's historic centre.
To add the islands as well, there is an 11-day version with the Galapagos: Quito, Galápagos y Amazonía · Yasuní Ecolodge · 11 días (10 nights: 4 in Quito, 3 in the Galapagos and 3 in the Amazon). Galapagos flights and fees are not included; if you are weighing a boat against a hotel, read Galapagos Cruise or Hotel: Which Is Better?.
Next step: request a proposal with real dates
Tell us how many nights you want, whether you prefer a lodge or a cruise, and who is travelling. We will send a proposal with duration, category, transfers and what is not included, so you compare on facts rather than brochures. If the itinerary is still unclear, contact us and we will design it with you.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best Amazon lodge in Ecuador?
There is no single best lodge: it depends on budget and days. In our catalogue, Yasuni EcoLodge has the lowest starting price, La Selva EcoLodge offers stays of 3 to 5 days, and Napo Wildlife Center and Sacha Lodge sit at the higher end. Tell us your dates and we will recommend the best fit.
How many days do you need in the Amazon rainforest?
At least 3 days and 2 nights, although that leaves only one full day of exploring because the first and last days go on transfers. 4 days and 3 nights is usually a better balance, and 5 or more suits birders and photographers.
How do you get to an Amazon lodge from Quito?
Usually by a flight from Quito to El Coca of about 30-35 minutes, followed by a motorised canoe trip along the Napo River to the lodge. The flight is not included in the lodge listings; it is confirmed in the quotation together with the transfers.
Do you need a yellow fever vaccine for the Ecuadorian Amazon?
Spain's Foreign Ministry recommends it for visitors to the lowland Amazon (below 2,300 m), in provinces such as Napo, Orellana or Pastaza. See an international vaccination centre in good time, as the schedule depends on your history. Also bring repellent and long clothing against dengue and mosquitoes.
Is an Amazon lodge or a river cruise better?
A lodge lets you explore one area in depth from a fixed base; a cruise changes scenery and bundles the trip into one boat, on fixed departure days. The Manatee and Anakonda cruises offer 3, 4 and 7 nights; the lodges start at 3 days and 2 nights.
Is it safe to travel to the Amazon in Ecuador?
Spain's Foreign Ministry advises against travel, except when necessary, to provinces such as Orellana and Sucumbios, and El Coca is in Orellana. Lodges operate with organised transfers from Quito, but you should follow current official information and talk to us before booking. Travel with insurance and private transfers.
