Ecuador in 10 Days: A Day-by-Day Itinerary with Quito, the Galapagos and Baños

Day trip to North Seymour Island, Galapagos
Quick answer

Ten days are enough to see Quito, the Galapagos and a mountain break if you split the nights this way: 4 in Quito, 3 in the Galapagos on a hotel base and 2 in Baños. The Amazon and the remote islands are left out. You need a passport valid for 6 months and must pay the Galapagos fee (USD 200 for adults) plus the TCT (USD 20).

Key facts
  • Night split: 4 Quito, 3 Galapagos, 2 Baños
  • Quito sits at about 2,850 m: take the first day gently
  • Galapagos National Park fee: USD 200 adults, USD 100 under 12 (confirm the current amount)
  • TCT: USD 20, before flying to the Galapagos
  • Passport valid for at least 6 months

Can you see the best of Ecuador in 10 days?

Yes, as long as you accept leaving something out. Ten days fit the Andean capital, a short Galapagos stay and a mountain breather, but not the Amazon, Cuenca or the coast. The key is splitting the nights well: this itinerary uses 4 in Quito, 3 in the Galapagos and 2 in Baños, the same split as Quito, Galapagos & Baños · Galapagos Legend East in our catalogue.

One honest clarification: that 10-day listing combines Quito and Baños with a Galapagos cruise. Here we describe a hotel-based version, using the building blocks of Quito, Galapagos & Baños (North Seymour, Isabela, Baños waterfalls) and stretching it with more time in Quito. It is a starting model, not a closed programme: hotels, order and excursions are adjusted in your proposal.

Before the details, two notes on pace. Days 3 and 6 are flight days, and flights can be delayed, so do not schedule must-do activities on those dates. Also, Galapagos excursions depend on sea and weather, so the order can change on the ground.

The activities for days 1 to 7 come from the 8-day programme; the Cotopaxi stop and the thermal time come from the 10-day version. Day 9 is the wildcard that gives the whole trip some slack.

Days 1 and 2: how do you acclimatise in Quito without wasting time?

Quito sits at about 2,850 m, so take the first day gently, drink water and avoid exertion. Our programmes keep arrival day light, with an airport welcome and a private transfer to the hotel.

Day 2 combines the north and the centre. In the morning, the Pululahua crater and the Middle of the World; in the afternoon, the historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978. If you would rather go at your own pace, the Quito y Mitad del Mundo (6 horas) tour covers part of this route. For a fuller city plan, see What to See in Quito: 3-Day Itinerary and Day Trips.

For a bed, the catalogue offers Quito hotels in several categories, priced per room per night with breakfast: for example Wyndham Garden 4* (From USD 141.25) or Swissôtel Quito 5* (From USD 218.43). You will spend two more nights in the capital at the end, so it is worth choosing a comfortable, well-located hotel rather than only the cheapest.

Days 3 to 5: what can you do in the Galapagos with three nights in a hotel?

The Quito to Baltra flight takes about 2.5 hours in the programme; from Baltra you cross to Santa Cruz and reach Puerto Ayora. The first afternoon goes to the Charles Darwin Research Station, a conservation centre where giant tortoises are bred.

Day 4 is for Isla Seymour Norte, a flat island known for its frigatebirds and boobies. On day 5 you cross to Isabela, the largest island in the archipelago, on a boat ride of about two hours, and the programme visits Tintoreras. You can also book it as a standalone excursion: Isla Isabela. For reference, the excursions are priced per person at From USD 410.16 for the first and From USD 279.82 for the second.

With three nights you will not reach the remote islands, which are cruise territory. If that is your goal, compare the options in Galapagos Cruise or Hotel: Which Is Better?; and to budget fees and flights, see How Much Does a Galapagos Trip Cost? Real Budget.

  • National Park fee: USD 200 for foreign adults and USD 100 for under-12s, in cash on arrival.
  • Transit Control Card (TCT): USD 20, before flying.
  • Isabela dock tax: USD 10, according to our programme listings.

Confirm the current amounts before you travel: they can change.

Days 6 to 8: Baños or Papallacta to recover after the islands?

Day 6 is the heaviest: the flight back to Quito and, without a night in the capital, a road transfer to Baños de Agua Santa, about 3.5 hours away. If your return flight leaves late, consider sleeping in Quito and driving to Baños the next morning.

In Baños, the waterfall route takes in the Casa del Árbol, with its swing facing Tungurahua volcano, and the Pailón del Diablo, the best known waterfall in the area. For a bed, our catalogue offers Sangay Spa 4* (From USD 159.62 per room per night, breakfast included) and Samari Spa Resort 4*, both with a spa profile.

The shorter alternative is Papallacta, 1.5 to 2 hours from Quito, with hot springs above 3,000 m. It is cooler and less active than Baños but saves road time; you can do it in a day with Termas de Papallacta (Full Day). The comparison is in Things to Do in Baños and Papallacta, Ecuador.

Days 9 and 10: what should you do with the free day before flying home?

Day 9 is your margin. If something slips (a flight delay, tiredness) it acts as a cushion. If all goes well you have options: Otavalo market (Mercado Indígena de Otavalo (Full Day)), whose big day is Saturday, or simply a quiet stroll around Quito.

On day 10, the private airport transfer leaves about four hours before your flight, according to our programmes. With that buffer, expect an early start after any excursion the day before.

What are the variations: 7 days, 8 days or 11 days with the Amazon?

The 11-day version swaps the mountain relaxation for three nights at Yasuni EcoLodge. It is a big change of climate and rhythm: read Best Amazon Lodges in Ecuador: How to Choose before deciding. The yellow fever vaccine is recommended for the lowland Amazon, so check with your vaccination centre.

What should you leave out, and what logistics should you sort before booking?

These are the most sensible trade-offs with ten days:

  • Cotopaxi in depth: the itinerary only sees it from the road; going up needs a full day (Volcán Cotopaxi (Full Day)).
  • Mindo and Otavalo together: each is a full day trip from Quito; pick one.
  • The remote Galapagos islands: reachable only by cruise.
  • The Amazon: fits better in 11 days or more.

On timing: the warm season (December to May) brings warmer seas and better snorkelling visibility; the cool season (June to November) is better for hiking and birds. You will find the month-by-month detail in Best Time to Visit Galapagos: Month by Month.

And these are the practical points worth closing early:

  • Passport: at least 6 months of validity; Spanish citizens need no visa for up to 90 days. Other nationalities, check with your consulate.
  • Flights: international flights and Quito-Galapagos-Quito are not included in our listings.
  • Safety: Spain's Foreign Ministry describes a security crisis in the country; in Guayaquil it advises moving only as needed (airport and connections). Prefer direct connections to Quito and private transfers.
  • Insurance: travel with travel and health insurance.
  • Currency: the US dollar; in the Galapagos, carry notes in good condition.

Frequently asked questions

Is 10 days enough to see Ecuador?

Yes for a trip combining Quito, the Galapagos and a mountain break, but not for everything. Ten days split into roughly 4 nights in Quito, 3 in the Galapagos and 2 in Baños. The Amazon and the remote Galapagos islands need more days or a cruise.

How many days do you need in the Galapagos on a 10-day trip?

Three nights allow Santa Cruz plus two day trips, for example North Seymour and Isabela. It is a good introduction, but you will not see the farthest islands, which are visited only by cruise. If the archipelago is your priority, consider 4 or 5 nights.

Which is better for relaxing, Baños or Papallacta?

Baños offers waterfalls, adventure and hot springs in a warmer setting, but it is about 3.5 hours from Quito. Papallacta is 1.5 to 2 hours away, has hot springs above 3,000 m and is quieter. If time is tight pick Papallacta; if you want activity, Baños.

What fees do you pay in the Galapagos?

Foreign visitors pay a National Park fee of USD 200 per adult and USD 100 per child under 12, in cash on arrival, plus a USD 20 Transit Control Card before flying. Isabela adds a USD 10 dock tax. Confirm the current amounts before you travel.

Can you add the Amazon to a 10-day trip?

It is possible but tight. Our programme with the Amazon is 11 days: 4 nights in Quito, 3 in the Galapagos and 3 at Yasuni EcoLodge, without Baños. It needs a flight to El Coca and a recommended yellow fever vaccine, and you should check the security situation before booking.

What is the best time of year for this itinerary?

You can do it all year. From December to May the sea is warmer with better snorkelling visibility; from June to November there is garua mist and cooler water, but it is better for hiking and birds. Late December to early January and northern summer are high season: book early.
